In a shocking report, it has been revealed that one of the world’s leading EV makers Tesla Inc. created a dedicated team to cancel owners’ service appointments who have a complaint about the inaccurate driving-range of their car. As per a new report by Reuters, Tesla rigged the dashboard readouts in its electric cars to provide “rosy” projections of how far owners could drive before needing to recharge.

According to the account of a new used 2021 Tesla Model 3 owner who set out on a family road trip, expecting to get close to the claimed 353 miles of range on a full charge, he soon realized he was sometimes getting less than half that much range, particularly in cold weather.

This convinced the owner that his car had a serious defect.
The owner contacted Tesla and booked a service appointment in California. He later received two text messages, telling him that “remote diagnostics” had determined the battery of his Model 3 was fine, and the other one reading “We would like to cancel your visit.”
The report claims that Tesla employees had been instructed to thwart any customers complaining about poor driving range from bringing their vehicles in for service. The company is claimed to have silently created a “Diversion Team” in Las Vegas to cancel as many range-related appointments as possible.
The EV maker is said to have deployed the dedicated team since its service centers were overwhelmed with appointments from owners who had expected better range performance based on the company’s advertised estimates and the projections displayed by the in-dash range meters of the vehicles.
According to the report, some employees celebrated canceling service appointments by putting their phones on mute and striking a metal xylophone, triggering applause from coworkers who sometimes stood on desks inside the team’s office in Nevada! The team is said to have closed hundreds of cases a week, while staffers were also tracked on their average number of diverted appointments per day.

Tesla allegedly saved around $1,000 or about Rs 82,303 for every canceled appointment, the people in the know of the matter revealed. Another goal was to ease the pressure on service centers, some of which had long waits for appointments.
The report emerges just weeks after Elon Musk‘s Tesla had opened discussions with the Indian government for an investment proposal to set up an EV factory in the country with an annual capacity of as many as 5 lakh cars, with prices starting from around Rs 20 lakh!
