Even though Sunny Deol‘s ‘Gadar 2’ is nearing the conclusion of its theatrical run, and it is still doing well at the box office. According to industry insiders, the Anil Sharma-directed film earned Rs 50 lakh on Saturday. This brings ‘Gadar 2’s 44-day total to a whopping Rs 522.84 crore.
‘Gadar 2’ achieved a 25.16 percent occupancy rate in the Hindi-speaking market, nearly double that of this week’s release ‘The Great Indian Family’.The sequel to the 2001 blockbuster debuted with a jubilant figure of Rs 40.1 crore and maintained the trend for nearly a month. The war drama, starring Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel, was launched on August 11, and its box office revenue was only hampered after Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Jawan’ hit the theaters on September 7. While the Atlee-directed picture has broken all records, earning Rs 546 crore in just 17 days, Gadar 2 appears to be falling short of Pathaan’s collection of Rs 543 crore. By the end of this week, the film is expected to have earned Rs 525 crore in total. ‘The Vaccine War’, directed by Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri, will be released in theaters this Friday, while ‘Jawan’ is still a crowd-pleaser in its third week.
The popularity of “jingoistic” films like ‘The Kashmir Files’, ‘The Kerala Story‘, and ‘Gadar 2’ has been described as “harmful” by acclaimed actor Naseeruddin Shah. In a new interview, the veteran actor expressed his displeasure with the success of these films directed by Hansal Mehta, Anubhav Sinha, and Sudhir Mishra. Naseeruddin was asked by Free Press Journal if the goal of filmmaking in Bollywood has changed. “Now, the more jingoist you are, the more popular you become because this is what has been ruling this country,” he said adding, It’s not enough to love your nation, but you also have to make up phantom adversaries.”
Naseeruddin Shah stated that the producers who make these jingoistic films are unaware that “what they are doing is very harmful.” “In fact, films like Kerala Story and Gadar 2 I haven’t seen but I know what they’re about,” he continued, “It’s troubling that films like Kashmir Files are so successful, yet films by Sudhir Mishra, Anubhav Sinha, and Hansal Mehta, who are attempting to represent the truth of their times, are not.” However, Vivek Agnihotri has brushed off the actor’s remarks.
‘Gadar 2’ is a sequel to the critically acclaimed ‘Gadar: Ek Prem Katha’. Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel reprised their legendary roles as Tara and Sakeena in the film. The film, directed by Anil Sharma, also includes Utkarsh Sharma, Manish Wadhwa, and Simratt Kaur in significant roles.
