Veteran actress Tanuja is one of the most legendary actresses we have in Bollywood. She has entertained her fans with her choices of films and brilliant performances for over decades now.
While she has been the favourite of most directors of her time, did you know that she was once slapped by a director on the set for some reason? Yes, you read that right! In a throwback interview, the veteran star revealed that director Kidar Sharma once slapped her for repeatedly laughing when she was supposed to cry during a scene in ‘Hamari Yaad Aayegi‘.
As per Lehren Retro, Tanuja told Sharma that she is not in a mood to cry. Her tantrum pissed the filmmaker off, and he slapped the actor. Tanuja left the set of the film crying and complained to mother Shobna, who after listening to the entire episode, gave another slap to Tanuja. She took her back to the set and told Sharma now that she is crying and he can resume the shoot. While ‘Humari Yaad Aayegi’ brought Tanuja into the spotlight, the movie did not achieve success at the box office. The only film which brought her a little recognition was the 1967 film, ‘Jewel Thief’.
In an old interview with Prasar Bharti, Tanuja said that she got recognition as an artist when she started doing Bengali films in 1962. According to her, she got a stature there, which made her feel she is a good actress, and not bad. The actress also added that Bengali films opened the doors for her and she got her true appreciation for her craft there.

Despite all the success she received in her career, the actress never took credit for them. She once told Filmfare, “It’s all about the director. I never interfered even if I had to give 40 retakes. I’ve never worked with a director who didn’t know what he was doing. And if I happened to, then I’d end up doing my own thing.” At another moment she noted, “My Hindi film career was never too hot.”
Tanuja has two daughters Kajol and Tanishaa Mukerji.
